Garage Door Refinishing in Locust Grove, VA: Clean 3-Day Job

Project Description

A new house should feel like yours the moment you pull into the driveway. Karen D. had just bought a home in the Lake of the Woods subdivision, and its exterior garage doors already carried an older stain. She wanted this garage door refinishing in Locust Grove, VA, handled by people who knew stained wood. So she searched Google for professional painters who could refinish previously stained doors and found Medias Painting LLC.

Refinishing stained wood isn’t the same as painting it. New stain has to soak into wood that already has an old finish, so both the product and the method matter. Our crew stained the garage doors with Sikkens ProLuxe Cetol SRD, painted the exterior trim, and refinished the home’s other exterior doors, including a fiberglass door. The full project took 3 days and cost $3,500. Medias Painting LLC has painted homes in this region since 2000.

Project Scope: Garage Door Refinishing in Locust Grove, VA

Karen’s project covered four surfaces. Each one needed its own finish plan.

Previously Stained Exterior Garage Doors

The garage doors were the main reason Karen called. They already had a stain on them, so the new coat had to work with that finish, not fight it. Our crew applied Sikkens ProLuxe Cetol SRD, a semi-transparent stain that lets the wood grain show through. For a homeowner, stained garage doors keep the natural wood look that painted doors lose.

Exterior Trim

We painted the exterior trim around the doors and the home. Fresh trim frames the newly stained wood. Painting the exterior trim is also the first line of defense for the wood joints and edges it covers.

Exterior Wood Doors

Karen’s other exterior wood doors were restained and refinished during the same visit. Doing every door at once means one crew, one schedule, and one set of finishes to track.

Fiberglass Door

Fiberglass does not absorb stain the way wood does. To refinish a fiberglass door, the crew used a gel stain that sits on the surface and creates a wood-grain look. A gel stain finish on a fiberglass door gives a durable, low-upkeep door the warm tone of real wood.

We finished all four surfaces in one 3-day visit. If your home has a mix of stained and painted surfaces, see our exterior painting services near Locust Grove, VA.

Paints & Products Used

The product choice determined how these garage doors would look and hold up. Here is what the crew used on the stained wood:

Sikkens ProLuxe Cetol SRD (semi-transparent exterior wood stain). A one-coat, deep-penetrating finish made for exterior wood. It carries added UV protection and mildew resistance, and its semi-transparent tint keeps the wood grain visible instead of covering it.

This finish fit because the doors were already stained. A penetrating stain refreshes color and adds protection while keeping the natural wood look. That is why Sikkens Cetol SRD was the right base for this garage door refinishing in Locust Grove, VA.
